Warning About Ships’ Garbage

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. The discharging of garbage or other matter into New Zealand harbours by overseas ships was likely to lead to introduction of foot-and-mouth disease, Parliament was told on Friday. Part of the duties of the port agriculture inspection service was to ensure that garbage was not discharged within harbour areas, said the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard). The Stock Act was being revised and consolidated. “The adequacy of the penalties for offences under that act will accordingly come under consideration,” said Mr Gerard. He was replying to Mr W. E. Rowling (Opp., Buller).
