The Economy

Sir.-—lt was with great interest that I read Mr. Rosenberg’s article in “The Press” on Wednesday. Finally someone has been able to work out what has happened to our balance of payments not I might say, a very difficult job. In most respects this country deserves what it gets, as we are one of the highest industrially-protected nations in the World. We cannot even live up to our own motto of decent prices for agricultural products, as we are buying sugar at what must be bargain rates. Perhaps someone should tell the Government that trade happens to go both ways. If some of these bright economists only stopped to think they would also note that internally this is just what the farmer has to face up to, except that he has been saddled with the additional handicap of inefficient industries producing in-

ferior products at well above World prices. Yours etc., R. S. BUICK, Blenheim, September 8, 1966.
