HORSE TALK

Pony Show

The Christchurch Pony Club Show is being held today at Yaldhurst. This show is always popular as it caters not only for the show pony but also for the ordinary pony owned by the average pony club member. Competitors have entered from most of the 16 branches. There are 753 members of the Christchurch Pony Club.

The Christchurch area of the Horse Society will be holding a Bolgon Course from September 26 to October 3 at Ashburton.

The first F.E.I. jumping show will be held at Mr and Mrs Moore’s property at Kaiapoi on Saturday, September 17. There will be a full programme of jumping events during the day catering for all grades of horses and ponies, as well as four showing classes.

Practice Day The show jumping practice day which was to have been held at Yaldhurst tomorrow has been abandoned. Not enough rails have been painted to make it possible. Instead, another painting day will be held.

Certificates The Royal Agricultural and Pastoral Society will be holding a measuring day to issue permanent height certificates on Sunday, September 18 at the Christchurch Show grounds. Permanent certificates will be issued only to animals of seven years or more and all animals must be unshod. A blacksmith will be available on the grounds in the morning and also a vetinarian to certify the age. Booklet The Canterbury area of the Horse Society is going to print an equestrian guide containing information of use and interest to all who follow riding. It will contain a comprehensive list of show dates and other equestrian events, and a list of hacks hunters and show jumpers with breeding performance as far as possible.

For those interested in breeding it will contain a list of studs and stallions at stud in Canterbury. This work is being carried out under the direction of Mr R. Blair.

Buster Buster, the versatile mount of Miss J. Richardson, is to be retired from one-day-events and probably from showing classes as well.

Although very sprightly for his 15 years, the ground is often too hard for Buster in the summer months and the decision has been made to concentrate on Argus, Buster’s illustrious' stablemate. in further competitions.

Buster, who was bred in Southland, is by the thoroughbred, Thesus, out of an unknown pony mare. He won the Supreme Champion Pony award at the Gore A and P show in 1958, as well as numerous other awards, before he was bought for Miss Richardson in 1959. He was the champion pony at the Hawarden A and P show and since then he has won and been placed in one-day events, part hack, and mannered and paced classes, as well as being champion hunter at the Ellesmere Pony Club Show.
