VACANCY No. 21: Department of Agriculture. Interesting work at Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre, Hamilton; Horticultural Research Centre, Levin; Wallaceville Animal Research Centre, Lower Hutt; Taieri Agricultural Research Centre, Mosgiel; Auckland Dairy Laboratory and Departmental offices throughout New Zealand. These positions involve four years’ training in wildlife conservation and management, and freshwater fisheries management. VACANCY No. 23: The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research employs technicians and technical trainees at various locations to assist scientists in research. Recruits are trained to a standard where they can undertake independent research, evaluate data and results for professional officers. A high standard of accuracy and intelligence is required, combined with manual skills in such fields as chemistry, physics, electronics, geology, soil science, engineering (mechanical, electrical and civil), botany, zoology, agriculture, mathematic and biochemistry. Study for New Zealand Certificate of Science or Engineering is encouraged by correspondence and “block” courses. Recruits should preferably hold University Entrance. VACANCY No. 31: Forester Trainees. The New Zealand Forest Service is recruiting boys for professional training in forest research and management. Applicants will be selected from two groups: boys with University Entrance in science subjects jnd an excellent school record; and those studying at a University for a science degree. After a short induction course at Rotorua early next year, successful applicants will be sponsored for a science course at university. Upou completion of the B.Sc degree trainees may have the opportunity of further study at an overseas university. VACANCY No. 32: Ranger Trainees. The New Zealand Forest Service has 30 vacancies. Applicants must be under 20 years, in good health, and of good physique. Good passes in English and mathematics are required. Training is spread over four years. The first year is spent in practical forest work and this is followed by a year in the Ranger School, Rotorua. Two further years of field work on different forests with increasing experience in supervision precedes the granting of a Ranger Certificate and appointment as Assistant Ranger. Further promotion is on merit. The duties of a Ranger consist of forest management, planning and organising of work and the contract of junior staff. Ranger trainees commencing duty in 1967 may have two years in the field before attending the Ranger School. MISCELLANEOUS: The Ministry of Works has vacancies for Laboratory Technicians in main centres and on power projects. The New Zealand Forest Service has vacancies for Junior Woodsmen at various locations and the Health Department has one vacancy at its National Health Institute, Wellington, for a person with the minimum of University Entrance with chemistry, mathematics and/or physics.
