WINTERED SHEEP

More On Lands Dept. Blocks

I Sheep wintered on Lands and Survey Department properties in 1965 showed a 12.5 per cent rise on the previous year, while cattle numbers increased by 8.5 per cent, the Minister of Lands (Mr R. G. Gerard) said on Thursday. Addressing the Federation of New’ Zealand Wool Merchants at Hamner Springs, Mr Gerard said preliminary returns indicated that these increases could be matched and possibly exceeded during the current year.

Wool production last season exceeded 12 million lb. The department’s operations extended over 1,700,000 acres on which were wintered 1.400,000 sheep and 207,000 cattle. “It is our objective to have as many breeding stock, both cattle and sheep, as possible on our blocks." the minister said. “These are required to ' provide, not only replace- ; ments in development areas, i but also to supply civilian settlers with balanced flocks and herds.”

Over the years, the departi ment had settled more than 4000 individual farmers on their own properties.
