Sand Too Dry

AUCKLAND, Sept. 9
Dry sand caused the low platings of two young New Zealand entrants in a recent International sand modelling contest in France, the youngsters said in disappointed tones at the Auckland airport Tony Davison, aged 12, of Whitianga. was disappointed that his model of a Maori pa at Rotorua cracked in half after 45 minutes of building. “It took me another 45 minutes to rebuild It’* said Tony. “It didn't leave me much of the two-hour period to polish it up.” He was placed 10th in the section for nonEuropeans. There were 10 entrants.
Alison Coombes. aged 13. of Takapuna, who wu placed ninth. Mid she could not finish her model of t’anla, the Napier mermaid, because she put water in her Mnd before she built the model.
Other contestants put water on the sand after they had built most of their models.
Alison and Tony earned their trips to France as winners of the “Weekly News” Mnd modelling contest Their trips were sponsored by the French airlines, U.T.A. and Air France, and the New Zealand Travel and Holidays Association.
