ATTACK TOWIN

Soccer Xi’s Last Chance

The last of the major soccer trophies Canterbury holds, the Jones Cup, will be at stake at English Park today when Otago plays the second leg of the annual competition between the two provinces. Otago already has a firm grip on the cup, having won the first leg, 3-1, in Dunedin earlier this season. Canterbury must win by at least two clear goals today to retain the trophy on the aggregate of goals for the two matches. Canterbury faces a stiff task to salvage something from the wreck of a provincial season in which the only major success was holding Sing Tao (Hong Kong) to a 1-1 draw.

But even a two-goal deficit is not beyond the Canterbury team, although the whole emnhasis must be put on attack from the start. There will be no future in a draw or a 1-0 win, if the intention is to retain the Jones Cup. Once again the Canterbury attack is suspect, having the potential to score goals but not the variety to unsettle a solid defence. So far this season, however, little has been seen of the forwards as a striking unit: too often they have been drawn back into cover defence. leaving no more than one or two players to take on the opposing defence. Today. Canterbury has everything to win and nothing to lose by adopting an ailout attacking role.
