Biggest Moa Egg Returned

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. The biggest moa egg in the world is back in New Zealand.

The egg was owned by Mr E. G. James, of Britain, a member of the International Sporting Club. Shown today by the museum’s new director (Dr. R. K. Dell), the egg looks almost freshly laid. It was discovered when foundations were being dug for a Kaikoura cottage on the farm of a Mr Fyffe in 1859. A workman cut into the side of

a mound and hit the egg with a pick, smashing in one side. The fragments broken from the egg are still on their way back from London.

Dr, Falla brought the major part of the egg with him from London on his return to New Zealand from a working visit recently.

When uncovered by the workman in 1859, the egg was carried in the arms of a Polynesian skeleton.

The egg is 10 Inches long and seven inches across.
