TELEVISION LICENCES

‘lmpossible’ To Reduce Cost

(N.Z. Press Association >

WELLINGTON, Sept. 9.

It would be impossible to consider any reduction in television licence fees at present, the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Scott) said in Parliament today. Mrs R. M. Stevenson (Govt., Taupo) had asked if there was any possibility of a reduction in view of the N.Z.B.C.’s surplus or profit of more than £lm.

Mr Scott said the figure of £1,360,160 shown in the 1966 report represented a surplus of revenue over expenditure. The corporation financed capital expenditure from revenue and the whole of the surplus referred to by Mrs Stevenson was spent on items of a capital nature. “If the corporation is to pursue its plan to extend and improve the television and radio coverage of New Zealand it must continue to earn a large revenue surplus from its annual operations,” the Minister said.
