VIOLET DAY APPEAL

Gifts Exceed £2OOO

More than £2OOO was collected in the annual Violet Day street appeal held yesterday by the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society. The president (Mrs N. M. Peryer) said that this sum included £93 from a stall in Cathedral square, which sold mainly cakes and sewing, and £56 from a flower stall in the Square. “Although last year we raised about £2200, today’s appeal has been a tremendous success, if the weather during the afternoon is taken into account,” Mrs Peryer said. “We have been thrilled with the response, and we are deeply grateful to the public for their support.” Mrs Peryer said that the large collection of spring flowers this year had been the best ever received. The flowers came from Burnham, Avoca Valley, Greymouth, Moncks Spur, Mount Pleasant, and Banks Peninsula. For three or four days growers had saved large supplies of flowers for the society, and schoolchildren and other volunteers had helped to pick and bunch them.
