"Unscrupulous" Methods
A TWO-WEEK “blitz” on z secondhand-car yards in Sydney revealed about 228 serious defects in cars, the Press Association reports. Inspectors from the Department of Motor Transport found a loaf of bread had been used to plug a rusted bodywork section in one car, a cotton shirt had been used as backing material in a rust-patch-ing job in another car, and in another steel wool plugged a badly-corroded section. The Minister for Transport (Mr M. A. Morris) said some of the rust-repair methods were unscrupulous. Eighty per cent of vehicles inspected
in the first week of the tests ! proved to be defective, but ; later this proportion dropped 'considerably. “I hope this indicates that the relatively few unscrupulous dealers are finally mak- ; ing an effort to rid their : yards of death-traps,” Mr Morris said.
