Not World’s Highest Illegitimacy Rate
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 1. New Zealand did not have the highest illegitimacy rate in the world, the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) said in Parliament today.
He said that up to 1961 the New Zealand rate was not
significantly different from Britain, the United States, Australia or West Germany. “It was slightly higher than Canada and lower than France,” he said. But in 1962 the Maori illegitimacy figures were included for the first time and the New Zealand rate rose from 5.8 in 1961 to 8.1. “This was on a par with Denmark (8.3) but lower than Austria and Sweden (10.8 and 12.43),” he said. “It was not possible to make any comparisons on the basis of current figures as statistics from overseas countries are not available.” Mr D. S. Thomson (Govt., Stratford) asked Mr Marshall if there was any evidence to support recent newspaper suggestions that the increase was largely due to an influx of Australians who were making use of New Zealand’s “facilities.” Mr E. P. Aderman (GovtNew Plymouth): Keep off the grass. Mr Marshall said he had no evidence to support the reports.
