Foster. Dunn In Table Tennis Final

B. A. Foster (Otago) and M. L. Dunn (Auckland) will contest the New Zealand men’s open table tennis singles final on the last day of the national championships i n Christchurch today. The women’s final will be an all-Northland affair between Mrs N. Traill and Mrs N. Houlihan. Mrs Traill won the title last year and Mrs Houlihan has been runner-up for the last five years. Foster beat H. Waterhouse (Wellington) in a game which underwent amazing fluctuations. Foster dominated the first two games but hardly won a point in the next two. The fifth and final game went to Foster. The two women’s finalists won their matches in straight games. The only Canterbury player to reach a semi-final in a singles event was K. Ward in the under-18 boys’ competition. The second.seeded A. R. Tomlinson (Auckland), a New Zealand representative, was outhit and beaten for the second time in three days by the seventhseeded H. L. Waterhouse (Wellington). This was a match of brilliant hitting and counterhitting with both players standing up to the table. D. T. Thorner (Wellington, unseeded) beat fifth-seeded G. V Wilkinson (Auckland) in the fifth round. In the fourth round of the women’s singles, the third-seeded Miss V. M. Rolston (Franklin) was beaten by the unseeded Mrs A. Theyers <Waitemata).
