Hogan May Be Fastest
One of the most arduous events for amateur cyclists in Canterbury is the Christchurch - to - Akaroa and return twostage race tomorrow. In T. J. Tabak’s absence, the rider most likely to take fastest time is a break rider, R. J. Hogan (Papanui). He has six riders in his bunch and only three are off scratch: R. D. Mann (Papanui), P. A.
Skilling and D. Jones (Avon). Mann is a doubtful starter and the other two are unlikely to gain any of the 4Jmin they are giving away. Hogan may manage the double of first and fastest time, in the first stage at least. With the exception of the next group out—off Bmin—no bunch appears strong enough to keep together. The best may be G. R. Lienert
(Timaru), who is off 12min and last year won the second stage. In the Bmin bunch, the riders with the best chances are I. D. McLean (Papanui), D. J. Savage (Avon), and D. B. Hewson (Timaru). The most likely from scratch is Jones, who gained a first and a fourth last year. He impresses as the best climber of the 14-mile hill.
