SCHOOL MUSIC
Course For Teachers
Twenty secondary school teachers of music from Pahiatua to Invercargill yesterday began a short course in Christchurch arranged by the departments of music and extension studies of the University of Canterbury. Professor J. A. Ritchie said that this year three new music syllabuses—for university entrance .university burs, ary, and university scholarship examinations —had been introduced. There would be comparatively few candidates in music but the regional music syllabus committee of the Professorial Board deemed the course worth while. The new syllabuses required new material, new teaching techniques, and clarification in terms of examinations and the general musicianship of pupils. Professor Ritchie said that now teachers and pupils had substantially covered the new courses for the first time, this meeting of teachers would enable problems to be discussed, defects repaired, and a final polish given before the examinations.
The course will end tomorrow.
