DRY, COLD WINTER
Only 3.96 in Of Rain Winter ended officially on Wednesday. It was colder than normal; though considerably drier and cloudier, according to a report issued by the weather office at Harewood. The mean temperature was 42.6 degrees, compared with 43.4 degrees last year, and 3.96 in of rain was recorded, compared with 7.07 in last year. Rain fell on 26 days, and there was 350 hours of sunshine. Last year rain fell on 37 days and 381 hours of sunshine was* recorded. During AUgust the weather was slightly colder, dryer, and cloudier than average. The first three weeks xVere generally settled, but the last week was cold, wet, and sunless. Only 120 hours of sunshine was recorded, the lowest for August since 1953. The average is 146 hours. At Harewood 2.09 in of rain was measured, and at the Botanic Gardens 1.33 in fell. There were six rainy days at Harewood, and eight at the Botanic Gardens. On August 24 a very cold southerly outbreak brought snow to the high country, and 0.86 in of rain fell at Harewood.
The average temperature for the month was 44 degrees The maximum temperature, 67 degrees, was recorded at the Botanic Gardens on August 22. On the same day the temperature at Harewood was 66 degrees.
