OTTAWA, September 1
The Canadian Government has revised a bill aimed at ending the nation’s railway strike, now in its seventh day.
The Labour Minister (Mr i John Nicholson) announced ’ new provisions giving the . strikers wage increases total!- ■ ing 18 per cent during 1966 and 1967 as the Canadian < House of Commons began I iclause-by-clause study of the : I measure. !' The original bill ordering/ the 118.000 strikers back top work granted them two in- 1 ] Iterim wage boosts of 4 per I cent each for 1966. and left [ i 1967 wages up to negotiations, [or arbitration later. [l I Mr Nicholson said he would/
move an amendment providing for further increases of 4 per cent on January 1 next and 6 per cent on July 1, 1967. The unions, demanding increases totalling more than 30 per cent over the present 12.22 Canadian dollars an hour wage rates, were strongly critical of the government's : original back-to-work proposals. Their reactions to thb [amended bill remained cool. “We're already on strike for more than that.” a raili way union leader said.
