RESCUING U.S. PILOT
Planes Fire At Junks GV Z. Press Assn Copyright) SAIGON, Sept. 1. American planes blasted targets in North Vietnam and held off enemy junks trying to capture a United States pilot whose plane was shot down off the port of Haiphong. The American plane was a Navy Crusader photo reconnaissance jet. The pilot baled out over the gulf, scrambled into a life raft and became the prize in a race between a fleet of enemy junks and United States rescue helicopters. Another jet blasted the junks with 20mm. cannon fire and kept the junks at bay for 20 minutes until a Navy helicopter could pluck the airman to safety. It was the 348th American plane lost on bombing raids against the north.
