Salvation Army Visit To Banks Peninsula
The Salvation Army's annual visit to Banks Peninsula, which was begun by two Salvation Army laymen more than 50 years ago, would this
year be held from September 12 to 15, said the divisional youth officer (Captain B. McStay) yesterday. A team of five Salvation Army officers will present a programme of films, musical entertainment, devotions and meetings to people in Charteris Bay, Port Levy, Pigeon Bay, Little Akaloa, Okains Bay, Le Bons Bay and Duvauchelle. The team members will be Lieutenant R. Solomon (Rangiora), Captain R. Rees (Temuka), Captain I. Irwin (Waimate), Lieutenant D. Tong (Christchurch), and Captain K. Gooder (Christchurch), who will be the leader. Captain McStay said the films that would be shown would include a documentary, general interest films, religious films, from the Religious Film Society, and cartoons for children. The documentary “Out of the Shadows,” would show the work of an interdenominational school for blind children run by the Salvation Army, at Thika, Central Africa. Although the Salvation Army made occasional visits to other isolated places in New Zealand, Banks Peninsula was the only place that had been visited regularly, he said. An officer from Picton, Captain G. Verkaaik, had made some visits to parts of Perlorous and Queen Charlotte Sounds and four years ago Captain J. Brown, who is now the corps officer at Greymouth, and Captain R. Brinsdon, had visited settlers at Jackson’s Bay. About the same time a Methodist minister, the Rev. G. Glen, conducted meetings at the Manapouri work camps at Deep Cove. Another Methodist minister the Rev. C. Kitchingham, who represents all churches in the National Council of Churches, is now the chaplain at West Arm and Deep Cove.
