Treating Tree Tomatoes
(N.Z. Press Association» AUCKLAND, Aug. 31. Two Auckland scientists have discovered a cheap way to store tree tomatoes. The process, which involves heat treatment to kill fungus, may make it possible to keep the fruit fresh long enough for it to be sold in America and Britain. Storage difficulties have now prevented the export of fresh tree tomatoes, and tinning is not considered practicable because acid in the fruit attacks the tin and discolours the fruit. Mr G. Strachan, a divisional officer at the Fruit Research Division at Mount Albert, and Mr W. A. Fletcher, senior tropical fruit specialist to the Department of Agriculture in Auckland, have worked for some time on the new development.
