MORE FOR POWER
Cost Rise Likely Consumers may have to pay more for electricity to finance the activities of the Electricity Department. The chairman of the Municipal Electricity Department (Mr W. E. Olds) said yesterday that new rates for purchasing power from the department would probably be announced at the annual conference of the Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association at Rotorua later this month. Mr Olds said the Minister of Electricity (Mr Shand) was expected to outline the costs of producing power, meeting loan charges and financing future undertakings at the conference. During the winter, the M.E.D. frequently exceeded a 200,000 kilowatt load. Next winter the department expects that peak loads of 200,000 kilowatts or more will be commonplace and in keeping with the annual 9 per cent growth in demand. Revenue for the current financial year is expected to be almost £4 million, compared with £3.6 million last year. The result will depend on the weather.
