PARLIAMENT TO REMOVE JUDGE

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P. A.)

TORONTO, August 31.

For the first time in Canadian judicial history, Parliament will be asked to remove a Superior Court judge from office.

The unprecedented action is being taken again Leo Landreville, a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario, on the strength of a scathing report by a retired judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, Ivan C. Rand. The 56-year-old Mr Justice

Landreville has been under pressure to resign since it was disclosed that he made a 117,000-doilar windfall profit in the sale of shares in a natural gas firm. He has persisted in his refusal to step down from the bench and now a Joint resolution is to be introduced in the Canadian Senate and House of Commons to remove him. The resolution will undoubtedly cause considerable soul-searching because, by well-established tradition, politicians are careful to leave judges alone once they are appointed. There seems no doubt, however, that the resolution to remove the judge will be passed.
