Pillaging From Cars Said To Cause Delays
A former controller for the British Ministry of War Transport told a transport licensing hearing that pillage of articles from motor-cars while in transit on rai. waggons delayed delivery of cars to owners.
Bruce Johnstone White, the managing director of South Island Motors, Ltd., told the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J S. Haywood) that replacement parts often had to be sent out from the manufacturers overseas
White was giving evidence in support of an amendment to a continuous goods service licence by the addition of 12 vehicle authorities, which is being sought by E. H. Boyce and Company, Ltd., Christchurch. The application also seeks exemption from rail restriction in the South Island The company wants to extend its vehicle transporter service.
The application is being opposed by the Railways Department (Mr F D Daly). Car Haulaways (N.Z.. Ltd.), Auckland and Wellington. McLennan’s Transport, Blenheim (Mr R. Stacey), and G. S. Brockett is appearing for Transport (Nelson), Ltd The secretary of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union, Arthur Sylvanus Roberts, said his union welcomed the introduction of transporters in the South Island Roberts did not think transporters would cause redundancy among drivers aPhough a transportei w-ould employ one driver where eight were previously engaged. It would be in the public
interest for transporters to be used for they prevented unnecessary mileage being clocked before delivery to customers, said Roberts.
The hearing, which began on Wednesday, is expected to end early this week.
