Toki Changes To League
Th* MU-44 N,w Zealand Maoris' Rugby Union wing, J. M. Toki, mad* a successful debut In Rugby League by scoring two tries fer Papanui against Sydenham at the Shew Grounds on Saturday.
Toki, who had trained with Papanui earlier this year before deciding to remain with the Shirley Rugby Union Club, mad* an unexpected debut. Between HU and MM he played 15 matches on th* wing for North Auckland and played six matches for New Zealand Maoris. Powerfully built at more than 14 stone and a half, 26-year-old Toki is the second prominent Maori player to change codes in Christchurch this season. W. A. Flavell, also from Shirley, joined Marist at the beginning of the season after having represented West Coast and Canterbury Maoris at Rugby Union.
