N.I. Has Convincing Table Tennis Win

The North Island gained a convincing 16-8 victory against the South Island in the annual inter-island table tennis contest played at Cowles Stadium on Saturday evening. The North Island’s men’s and women’s teams both won, 8-4.

However, the contest was by no means one-sided and the South Island won more games than anticipated and did even better than the scores suggest.

A. R. Tomlinsort (Auckland) and Mrs Traill (Northland) were in a class of their own.

V. N. Brightwell (Canterbury) beat G. V. Wilkinson (Auckland) for the first time ever in an amazing match. At one period Brightwell scored only 17 points while Wilkinson had 50. yet he still managed to win. J. Armstrong (Canterbury) took a game from Tomlinson, the only player to do so, and B. A. Foster (Otago) beat M. L. Dunn (Auckland), the No. 1 seed for the national titles in straight games. The 14-year-old Miss Y. M. Fogarty (Otago), the youngest player ever selected to represent the South Island, beat Miss V. M. Dolston (Hamiltony. the third seed for tha national titles, in straight games. Mrs Traill, the top seed for the national titles, played excellent table tennis, meeting trouble only against Mrs M. J. Shadbolt (Canterbury), who is unseeded. Mrs Shadbolt and Miss Fogarty were the best South Island players. Mrs T. May (Canterbury) was patchy and Miss V. E. Braumann (Otago) made little impression. Miss C. E. Johnson (Hamilton) played particularly well for the North Island. Dunn. Tomlinson and M. W. Borlase (Wellington) all played well for the North Island, but Wilkinson appeared a little out of touch. Brightwell all played to their best form for the South Island. Results (North Island names first) are:

M. L. Dunn beat J. Armstrong, 21-5, 13-21, 21-18: lost to B. A. Foster. 20-22, 17-21. . A. R. Tomlinson beat Foster, 21-16, 21-5: beat Armstrong, 16-21, 21-11, 21-5.

G. V. Wilkinson beat J. Taylor. 26-24. 21-12; lost to V. N. Brightwell, 19-21, 21-5, 21-23.

M. W. Borlase beat Brightwell, 21-18, 24-22; beat Taylor, 21-13, 21-18. Dunn and Tomlinson beat beat Brightwell and Taylor, 21-8, 21-8; beat Foster and Armstrong, 21-7, 21-15. Wilkinson and Borlase lost to Foster and Armstrong, 11-21, 27-25, 17-21; lost to Brightwell and Taylor, 21-15, 17-21, 20-22.

Mrs N. Traill beat Mrs T. May, 21-16, 21-15: beat Mrs M. J. Shadbolt, 21-13, 21-19. Mrs J. F. Boswell lost to Mrs Shadbolt. 11-21, 19-21; lost to Mrs May, 19-21. 21-17, 16-21.

Miss C. E. Johnson beat Miss Y. M. Fogarty, 25-23, 21-13; beat Miss V. E. Braumann, 21-16, 21-14.

Miss V. M. Rolston beat Miss Braumann, .21-12, 25-23: lost to Miss Fogarty, 19-21, 16-21.

Mesdames Traill and Boswell beat Miss Braumann and Fogarty, 21-14, 21-13: beat Mesdames May and Shadbolt, 14-21, 22-20, 21-15.

Misses Johnson and Rolston lost to Mesdames Shadbolt and May, 16-21, 13-21: beat Misses Braumann and Fogarty, 11-21, 22-20, 24-22.
