Hurricane Relief A special hurrican relief stamp will be issued by the Western Samoa Post Office on September 1. It will also be on sale at chief post offices in the four main centres of New Zealand and at the Postal Division, General Post Office, Wellington. The Chief Postmaster in Christchurch (Mr M. E. Wilson) said yesterday that the 8d value of the Western Samoa independence definitive issue was being overprinted with the legend: “Hurricane Relief 6d.” “This will make the selling price Is 2d and the proceeds from the surcharged portion will go to assist hurricane relief work,” he s.aid. “First-day cancellation on covers marked “First Day of Issue” will be provided at Apia. For this, a charge of 2d a cover will be made and an extra 2d for service fee will also be charged.” he said. “Self-prepared covers may be forwarded to Apia if desired and for these only the 2d service fee for each cover will be made for affixing the stamps.” said Mr Wilson. Orders for stamps and firstday cancellations must be accompanied by a remittance covering cost of stamps required plus service fee and cost of envelope. Clients and collectors are requested to have their orders forwarded to reach the Chief Postmaster, Apia. Western Samoa, not later than August 25. 1966. Unless stocks are exhausted earlier, the special issue will be withdrawn from sale on November ' 30, 1966. The stamps are not valid for postage purposes in New Zealand, said Mr Wilson. “As there are no facilities for cashing New Zealand postal notes in Western Samoa, remittances should be by money-order, bank draft or British postal order,” he said.
