CYCLING Time Trial To Wellington
A Wellington four-man cycling team, including two juniors, defied the weight of numbers offered by Canterbury to win the first national 100 kilometres teams’ time trial at Yaldhurst on Saturday.
There were only four teams entered: Wellington and three Canterbury combinations. Southland, the other entry, did not arrive. The championship was ex tremely keenly contested and as near to home as Paparua. five miles from the finish of the 62j-miles journey. only ssec separated the three leading teams. Canterbury No. 2 being a little further back. Wellington won because its team was intact throughout, whereas Canterbury’s two strongest teams, the No. 1 and 3 combinations. each lost a member.
Canterbury No. 3. which was another ssec ahead of Wellington.
However, from that stage the Canterbury teams were virtually carried by P. a. Skilling and J. S. Danielson respectively and Wellington gradually inched ahead, winning by 20.5 sec from Canterbury No. 1. Wellington’s J. Sneddbn punctured at Aylesbury, about 15 miles out, and the team took about two miles to work together again. Results:

A novice 10-mile race for a trophy given by Tabak was won by the front-marker, G. Sword, who led all the way and struggled in llsec ahead of the rest. In the absence of P. Brydon, A. Paviell took fastest time for the first time for some weeks. Results: Tabak Trophy 10 miles: G. Sword (9min) 1, B. Chisholm <3|min) 2, L. Paviell (4Jmin) 3, T. Saunders (3Amin) 4. Fastest time: A. Paviell (scr), 26:40, 1: P. Sincock (scr) 26:41, 2: P. Creighton (scr), 26:41.1, 3.
Canterbury No. 1 suffered a crippling blow after only 15 miles when T. J. Tabak, who was unwell, withdrew. Tabak was still feeling the effects of a long flight back from the Commonwealth Games and the cold easterly, after the temperatures of the West Indies, had a drastic effect on him.
Canterbury No. 3 lost I. D. McLean, a placement for J. H. Cleary, about 10 miles from the end at West Melton and the No. 2 team was also without G. R. Sword for the last mile or two.
Canterbury No. 1 was l|min ahead of Wellington at the turn, but just after half-way D. Jones punctured and the Canterbury riders lost a minute. Canterbury No. 3 was lying second at this stage and after 50 miles, the No. 1 team was 20sec ahead of
