DUNEDIN DOMINATES CASH RACE
The first cash cycling race on a point-to-point course from Ashburton to Christchurch was dominated by Dunedin riders on Saturday The South Island 50-miles championship for the Lil Kesteven Memorial trophies was
won by J. McAuslin and C. J. McNaught took fastest time. The decision to run the race between two towns resulted in a much larger entry than might normally have been expected, but the stiffeasterly, which became very strong at Dunsandel. reduced the finishers to 17. The field was into three or four large groups as soon as Rakaia and even then the bunch of 9min and llmin riders looked likely to produce the winner This bunch, which had as many as nine riders at an early stage, stayed together to the finish, losing a rider every now and then until, nearing the finish, five were left. However, J. R Williams crashed and four contested the sprint with McAuslin winning by a cycle length The junior scratch rider, A ■J. McMeeken, punctured a short distance from the finish and tn the sprint for fastest time, K R. Jeffery left his challenge to McNaught too late and went down by half a wheel, though gaining fast.
