12,000 IN QUEUES

Esmeralda Open (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND Aug. 21. More than 12,000 people stood in queues for hours at the week-end waiting their turn to inspect the Chilean fourmasted schooner Esmeralda at Prince’s wharf, Auckland. The Esmeralda was open to the public for six hours today. In that time about 5000 crossed her gangplanks. The ship was open all day on Saturday and was visited by about 7000 people. Adult visitors paid 6d to see the ship and about £3OO was collected for marine charities.

Captain Roberto Kelly, the commanding officer, stationed his crew at strategic parts of the ship to prevent small boys climbing the rigging or interviewing the bowsprit figurehead.

A special visitor today was Mr J. Stirling, aged 82, one of the few New Zealanders stil] holding a master’s ticket in sail. Mr Stirling was shown over the Esmeralda and introduced to some of the officers.

The Esmeralda will now be closed to visitors until she leaves on Wednesday morning.
