22 Points To Culhane
MERIVALE-PAPANUI 31: M. Cub hane kicked six goals from penalties and converted two tries. R. Leadbetter (2) and L. Johnson scored tries. MARIST 0. Persistent breaches by the Marist forwards made the outcome of the game far more one-sided than the actual run of play. Culhane was in tremendous kicking form for Merivaie-Papanui, but the Marist players appeared indifferent to this with disastrous results. By half-time Culhane had kicked two penalty goals to give his side a 6-0 lead. Early in the second spell he kicked three more fine penalty goals, one from more than 40 yards out, to give Merivaie-Papanui a very comfortable 15-0 lead. By the end of the match his personal tally was 22 points. Merivaie-Papanui, however, deserved to win the game, if not by such a large margin. It had no lasting territorial advantage, but its backs showed better combination and more sharpness. J. Burns jumped well in the line-outs for Marist, although not always cleanly.
Referee: Mr K. G. Osbourne
