Talks On Vietnam Peace Prospects

(N.Z P.. 4 -Reuter— Copyright)

OTTAWA, August 21. President Johnson and Mr Lester Pearson, the Canadian Prime Minister, are expected to discuss Vietnam peace prospects at an informal meeting today. They will confer at the tiny Canadian mainland village of Chancook. The President also discussed Vietnam yesterday during a New England tour, disclosing that North Vietnam has been told American air raids will stop when the Communists stop sending troops into the south. Canada is a member of the three-nation International Control Commission on Vietnam and could play a role in steps leading to negotiations. This is the sixth meeting between the President and Mr Pearson since Mr Johnson took office. It is only the third time Mr Johnson has left United States soil as President — once previously to Canada and once to Mexico last April.

President Johnson said yesterday that the greatest need of the American people was “a strong dose of self-discip-line” to fight the war in Vietnam, to halt racial strife and to curb inflation.
