Ham Opening Today The largest privata automatic telephone exchange in the South Island will come into service at the University of Canterbury’s Ham campus today. Engineers will connect 600 interna) lines and 20 outside lines to the exchange, which will be linked to the central exchange in Hereford street The Riecarton automatic exchange has been by-passed te enable future expansion to 60 outside lines without altering the directory number of the university. The Ham exchange will also be linked directly to the university buildings in the eity by five lines. A spokesman for the Regional Engineer’s office said the cost of installing the entire exchange had exceeded £30,000, but would have been much greater had the Post Office been asked to provide the building to house the exchange. The university computer and the exchange will be housed in one building, which eost £55,000. The new private exchange is the equivalent of that serving the town of Methven, and is fed by more that) three miles of cable. It will ultimately carpt 1500 internal and 60 outside lipes.
Engineers will today test 393 telephones already installed in the new university and during next week they will install another 104.
