Cashmere H.S. Concert

About 500 people enjoyed an interesting programme ranging from serious orchestral and choral selections to a gay Laotian song at the annual concert of the Cashmere High School. The concert opened with the 55 members of the school orchestra, conducted by Mr F. E. Dennis, playing the Grand March from Verdi’s “Aida.” This was followed by selections by the treble boys’ choir and the orchestra then accompanied Karen Hill in two piano solos. The school chorale hummed “Nightfall in Skye” effectively in four-part harmony. The first half of the programme ended with items from the school trio and the three-part girls’ choir. A strong intrepretation of “My Lady Greensleeves” and the hymn “Eternal Father Strong to Save” by the brass band began the second half of the programme. Fifteen South-east Asian students then presented songs and dances from Malaya, Thailand, Laos, and Taiwan. Two folk songs were sung by the special girls’ choir, which sang before the Queen Mother at. the Royal Youth Concert in Wellington earlier this year. Two selections “Impatience” and “For You Alone,” were sung by vocal soloist, Grant Edgar. The concert ended to the enchanting melody of two pieces, played by the brass band from the Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by Grieg.
