President On Vietnam
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 19. President Johnson warned yesterday that the war in Vietnam “could bring even more pain before it ends.” But the President, addressing a group of 140,000 students who have been working for the Government during the summer months, renewed his pledge that Communist aggression would be met. “You and I would prefer that the answers for the future of South-east Asia be written in treaties, in plans for regional developments—in the works of peace. “But standing against that wish are men who would rather write in blood and terror. “They must—and they will —be answered,” he said.
