JAMAICAN VIOLENCE
Police Take Action (N.Z. P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) KINGSTON (Jamaica), August 19. Police yesterday began a massive drive to stamp out a wave of political violence—two months of gun battles, beatings and blasts from home-made bombs—that has terrorised Kingston’s western district. Some 150 police were drawn from rural areas to boost the city force, and 24-hour pa'trols were ordered in the district. Raids were planned on suspected hideouts containing stores of illegal firearms. One man has been killed and more than 40 seriously injured in outbreaks mainly between rival political gangs' mingled with criminal elements. Early last month police bulldozed a shanty-town squatter colony in the area in an attempt to obliterate troublespots and uncover hidden arms.
Murder Charge. John Duddy appeared in Court today charged with the murder of three London policemen last week.—London, August 19.
