I’m sure he tells the honest Truth About his Reformation: His loutish Brawls, his gaolbird Youth, His Rise in social Station: He keeps the Law he once defied, — That’s Cause enough for honest Pride. No grudge against the Bench he bears, For Reprimand or Sentence; The tangible Rewards he shares, Of Penance and Repentance; His Job, his Car, his House and Section, He owes them All to that Correction. I’m glad he owns his own T.V., Somehow, that’s reassuring,— The law-abiding Life would be So much the less alluring Without that Box to pass the Time, When once retired from Active Crime. A “cushy Job,” a Home, a Car, With Interest, Rates to pay, These Things are good, I’m sure They are,— What More is there to say? That’s what Life is, within the law, For Those that hold the Bench in Awe. Our “former Convict” has acquired What We, Sir, take for granted And We, how often We grow tired Of It, and disenchanted!
