Shopping Statement “Premature”

The announcement by retailers that Christchurch would have two late shopping nights in the week before Christmas this year was somewhat premature, said the secretary of the Canterbury Shop Assistants’Union (Mr B. Alderdice) yesterday.

The retailers had said that the late shopping nights would be Tuesday, December 20, and Friday, December 23.

Mr Alderdice said that the settlement arrived at between the retailers and assistants in conciliation had not yet been ratified by the Arbitration Court. He did not wish to give the impression that the court would reverse the situation. “But the decision of the retailers here is assuming it to be a formality.” he added. “The point is that we made a settlement in conciliation which does permit late shopping to occur.” Christchurch shop assistants would be .paid overtime for the additional late night

and would also receive teamoney for it. Mr Alderdice said that in conciliation the assessors had acted in the interests of the shop assistants. If the shop assistants disapproved of what the union had done on their behalf, they would have the opportunity to renegotiate when the award expired.
