Irregularities In Ballot Alleged

(New Zealand Press Association/

WELLINGTON, August 15

A petition to the Court of Arbitration alleging irregularities in the last election of the Wellington branch of the Engineers’ Union has resulted in the indefinite postponement of the union’s national conference, which was to have been held in Wellington last month.

The petition, signed by 10 union members, some from Napier, alleges that areas in Hawke's Bay and Taranaki were not fully covered for ballot purposes when the election of officers was held. If the election was invalidated the decisions in which those officers participated at any conference might also be invalidated, it was said this morning. Those elected were a president, vice-president, secretary and 11 members of a manage-

ment committee representing different branches in the engineering industry.

The union is New Zealand’s biggest, and the Wellington area forms one of the biggest branches.
