Pampered Poodle

(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter —Copyright* LONDON, August 14.

Sir Winston Churchill’s chocolate-eating pet poodle, Rufus, was the classic example of a wrongly-fed dog, a veterinary surgeon said in London today. Mr W. L. Lloyd-Jones, who treated Rufus, says in his autobiography published today that the dog was “a nice little chap, but was plump, lethargic, and had awful teeth.” He writes: “Rufus's trouble was, of course. Sir Winston. He loved the dog. He loved chocolates. So he gave the one to the other.

“Indeed he gave the dog anything he happened to be eating himself. If Rufus had been a smoker he’d have had the finest Havana's.” Mr Lloyd-Jones, now retired, gives the following as a dog’s diet for fitness: couch grass for stomach ache, garlic for worms, and wild parsley to put his kidneys in order. He also recommends this kind of treatment for humans.

Mr Lloyd-Jones’s book “The Animals Came In One By One” is published by Seeker and Warburg.
