Auckland In Lead (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Auckland University dominated most sports on the first day of the New Zealand Universities winter tournament which opened in Auckland yesterday on a rainy day which forced the cancellation bf all soccer matches. The home teams won the men’s foils in the fencing, the restricted kyu judo championships, the snooker teams events and also took the lead in the golf, badminton along with Otago, and the table tennis along with Victoria University. In the men's foils Auckland had a clear win but in the judo the restricted kyu championship was a tense battle between Canterbury and Auckland. The local side won the last match to clinch the title, 100 points to 97. At the Grange golf course the best three members of the Auckland golf team totalled 475 for 36 holes to go into a 20-stroke first day lead over Canterbury University. The deciding 36 holes for the teams' event will be played today at Pukekohe.
In the individual championship G. Harrison (Auckland) was tied after the first day with P. Garner (Auckland) on 157. B. Taylor (Canterbury) was third 158, and the Freyberg Rosebowl player R. Barltrop (Victoria) was fourth on 159. In the smallbore rifle shooting for the 1.C.1. Shield Canterbury jumped into a first day lead with 791 points (possible 800) with Auckland second on 785 and Victoria third with 778.
Victoria holds a narrow lead in the men’s squash from Auckland and Canterbury, but in the women’s section, Otago completely dominated yesterday’s competitions.
