Tunnelling Talks May Reopen Soon

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 15. Negotiations between the Federation of Labour and the Italian tenderers for the Tongariro power scheme tunnelling project may reopen shortly.

“We are hopeful that negotiations can be recommenced soon,” the executive-director of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation (Mr P. J. Luxford) said today.

Mr Luxford has been acting on behalf of the Italian firm Codelfa-Cogofa after their representative left New Zealand when the talks were halted. He said he had corresponded with the F.O.L. on the possibility of negotiations being resumed.

The president of the F.O.L. (Mr T. E. Skinner) has said that any delay was not the responsibility of his organisation. The federation was prepared to reopen negotiations if the Italians were free to negotiate wage rates for the workers to be employed on the tunnelling jobs. The negotiations between the two organisations broke down in April after the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) intervened by letter.
