Language Advisers For Maori Schools

.Veto Zealand Press Associations

WELLINGTON, August 15.

The Department of Education will soon appoint three advisers to aid the teaching of English in schools which have a high proportion of Maori and other Polynesian pupils.

The Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said the senior adviser would prepare a handbook on teaching English to Maori and other Polynesian children. “Working in collaboration with other advisers, the senior adviser will help teachers plan effective language programmes in schools that have many pupils who have an inade-

quate command of English,” said Mr Kinsella. The Minister said inspectors of Maori and other schools had already gathered useful information on language difficulties. i By the time the proposed handbook for teachers was 'published the Department of Education would probably have five or six advisers helping to improve the standard of language teaching in Maori schools and in schools which had a high proportion of Maori pupils.
