BATTALION IN BORNEO
Withdrawal “Not Far Off” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said tonight that he could not say precisely when New Zealand’s battalion would be withdrawn from Sarawak since Indonesian confrontation had ended, but the end of its tour of duty in Borneo was “not too far off.”
“The way is therefore clear for Commonwealth forces to be progressively withdrawn from Sabah and Sarawak and discussions about timing have been going on for some time with the Malaysian Government.”
As part of the Commonwealth Strategic Reserve, New Zealand has contributed an infantry battalion, a squadron of Canberra bombers, a squadron of Bristol Freighters, a detachment of the Special Air Service, a frigate and two minesweepers on loan from the Royal Navy.
