The four-year-old American champion, Bret Hanover, won the race, recording his twentythird under two-minute mile. A record crowd of 22,117 saw Bret Hanover finish a length ahead of the Canadian-owned Timely Knight, with Cardigan Bay running on strongly into third. Bret Hanover, owned by R. Downing, of Ohio, and driven by F. Ervin, won the race in imin 59 3-ssec, only a second outside Adios Butler’s record set in 1960. Cardigan Bay was timed at 2niin 0 l-ssec. Bret Hanover was pressed to the limit, with the 9 to 1 shot. Timely Knight, hot on his heels and Cardigan Bay, having his first start since June 4 after an absence because of. a suspensory ailment, charging in with tremendous speed from fourth at the turn.
