FAIRLANE AGAIN
For the third time in as many starts on her present campaign at Riccarton, Fairlane proved a class above the open sprinters when she won the Selwyn Handicap for the second successive year in the colours of her Washdyke ownertrainer, Mr E. Jackson.
Fairlane shared the third line until the home turn, mastered the pacemaker, Time and Tide, early in the run home and resisted a determined challenge from Combination to win by a neck. Combination, which was in the fifth line with Gladaub and Mogambo half a mile out, but closest to Fairlane at the furlong, beat Mogambo for second by three lengths. Shakes was half a neck back fourth. He came from midfield to third fairly close to the end, but just failed to cope with Mogambo’s renewed bid.
Gladaub battled on for fifth and the favourite, Sir Juvante, was sixth. He could not quicken in the run home after sharing the fourth line with Scribbler to the straight.
