TROTTING Several Changes In Fertility List

Several changes have been made in the fertility list of stallions for the 1964-65 season, released recently by the Trotting Conference.

Statistics now show the live foal fertility of all stallions. In the past foals slipped or dead were taken into

account when calculating percentages. As well as giving all pertinent figures for the 1964-65 season, the table showed the number of mares covered during the 1965-66 season, the returns reflecting the success of the progeny of the various sires during the previous 12 months. A summary of fertility for

the 1964-65 season shows that 164 stallions covered 1788 mares. A total of 1147 live foals resulted, giving a return of 66 per cent, a most satisfactory result when other statistics are taken into account. During that season, returns showed that 159 mares had slipped foals or produced dead foals, and another 42 mares had died before foaling. There were 401 barren mares and 19 others were exported. Returns were not received for 20 mares.

Johnny Globe, with 104, covered the largest number of mares in 1964-65 and they left 60 live foals. Twenty mares proved to be barren. Johnny Globe served 94 mares the following year. Blue, with 12 live foals from 13 mares covered, had the best percentage of 92. The remaining mare slipped her foal or produced a dead foal. Blue served 12 mares the following year. Prince Charming, with 14 foals from 17 mares covered, had a percentage of 88, and Soangetaha had a percentage of 84, leaving 16 live foals from 20 mares. Forward, his half-brother, Morano, and Morris Eden all had percentages of 81. Forward left 17 foals from 22 mares, Morano 13 foals from 16 mares, and Morris Eden 22 foals from 28 mares. Newport Chief had a percentage of 80, leaving 51 foals from 64 mares. He served only 23 mares the following year. Thurber Frost was mated with more mares than any other imported stallion, leaving 59 foals from 82 mares for a percentage of 74. Garrison Hanover was mated with 75 mares and left 57 foals, a percentage of 76. Thurber Frost was mated with 92 mares the following year, and Garrison Hanover covered 66 mares. Other stallions widely patronised are listed, with the number of live foals in parentheses: Flying Song 61 (30); Young Charles 61 (44); Van Hanover 56 (41); Court Martial 51 (38); Hi Lo’s Forbes 46 (26); King Creed 43 (27); Ike Frost 34 (17); and Nephew Hal 32 (17).
