RAIN, SNOW IN N.I.

Slip On Rail Cleared (N.Z Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. August 9. The railway line five miles north of Palmerston North, between Ashhurst and Whakarongo, was closed from midnight to 7 o'clock this morning because of a slip on the line, which was cleared in time for today’s traffic. The sewer main crossing the Makino stream at the South street bridge in Feilding was carried away during a flash flood in the early hours of this morning. Snow fell in most areas surrounding Wanganui, while continual rain drenched the city last night. At 7 a.m. today snow was measured in Hunterville to a depth of sin. most of which fell at 11 b.m. last night, followed by heavy rain. Snow fell thickly in Marton between 9.30 and 11 p.m. and there, too, gave way to driving rain. Power and telephone communications over a wide area north of Feilding were disrupted this morning. Power lines in Rewa, Table Flat, and areas north of Pemberton’s Corner were brought down by the weight of snow, while telephone lines also snapped in districts north of Kimbolton. Almost three inches of rain has fallen in the Dannevirke district during the last 24 hours. Snow and sleet fell during the night and rain fell steadily up to midday.
