“The Press” In 1866
August 10 PROGRESS IN PRINTING.—Of all the useful arts that are daily spreading their benefits over the civilized world, none has made greater progress within the last few years than the art of printing. New discoveries and novel improvements are continually being added, so that the craft may soon be expected to reach the acme of perfection as far as speed—which is now-a-days the prime thing needed—is concerned. We learn that an engineer, in conjunction with a compositor. in Leipzig, has patented a new printing machine, which is said to surpass every one yet known. It is constructed with seven cylinders, each producing 2,000 per hour. From our English exchanges. we also note an instance of a truly marvellous speed in newspaper printing on a late occasion in London.
On the 28th of April, the Chancellor of the Exchequer finished his great and lengthy speech on the Franchise Bill, at half-past three in the morning. With such marvellous rapidity, however, did the reporters and compositors perform their work, that the morning papers, published before eight o’clock the same morning, contained almost verbatim reports of the speech that occupied over six columns of the “Times”. Early in the afternoon, the “Standard” had found its way to towns a hundred miles from London, and if not, in some instances, by the same train, at any rate by the one following, the “Times” and “Telegraph” were distributed to the eager throngs who awaited them... . Our readers must understand that the Parliament Houses are some two miles distant from the offices of the principal papers. Bravo old England!
