List Reduced To 863

The Post Office had installed private telephones at the rate of more than 880 a month during the first seven months of 1966, the Post Office’s regional engineer in Christchurch (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said yesterday. By July 31, 6216 new connexions had been made in the Christchurch metropolitan area. At the same date last year 5284 connexions had been made. “We have been able to keep abreast of the demand and catch up on some of the backlog,” Mr Wilkinson said. At present there were 863 applicants for new connexions, of whom 483 had been signed up for service within a certain time. The rest, living mainly in the central city area, would have to wait until fairly extensive .underground cable work had been done. Such work was also now under way at New Brighton and Riccarton to meet demands. Mr Wilkinson said that since February 1 the waiting list for telephones had been cut from 1514 to 863.
