Safety Legislation
THE 26 safety provisions, expected to form the basis of new safety legislation for cars in the United States, have been listed by the Associated Press. They include fitting improved door latches, collapsible steering columns and seat-belt anchorages, and design improvements relating to interior fittings. The provisions include constructing front compartments to reduce the likelihood of persons wearing lap belts suffering head or leg injuries, fitting recessed instruments and controls, stronger seat anchorages, safety glass in all windows, twin-circuit braking
systems, standard-height bumpers, a standard-gear quadrant layout for vehicles with automatic transmissions, windscreen washers and more efficient screen wipers, airpollution control devices, safer tyres and rims, reversing lights, exterior rear-view mirrors, recessed window and door controls, padded arm rests, padded seat backs to protect rear passengers flung forward in an accident, headrests for the front-seat passengers, rear-window demisters, roll bars for vehicles with soft tops, and ruptureresistant fuel tanks and pipes.
